Small apartment kitchens almost always end up as a Small apartment kitchens almost always end up as a straight-line layout. You don’t really get the classic ā€œwork triangleā€ here, but the principle behind it still matters. The trick is creating clear zones and giving yourself enough counter space so the flow feels natural. I always recommend keeping at least 18 inches of counter on each side of the sink and stove, and placing the fridge at one end so the workflow moves in a simple line. Balance is key—you don’t want things crammed too close together, but you also don’t want to be running laps in your own kitchen.

The way you move in and out of a kitchen matters j The way you move in and out of a kitchen matters just as much as the cabinets or finishes. Most kitchens connect to more than one space—the dining room, living room, sometimes even the mudroom or garage—and if those entryways are too tight, the whole room feels cramped no matter how well it’s designed. A good rule of thumb: doorways should be at least 32 inches (81 cm) wide for comfortable flow. And then there are the aisles—the space between your main work zones like the sink, stove, and fridge. If you’re the only cook, it just needs to be roomy enough for you to move freely. But if two people are sharing the kitchen, the space has to expand so you’re not constantly bumping into each other.
